Chiara Corbelletto

Established full-time sculptor Chiara Corbelletto has recently relocated her studio to CEAC. Chiara’s sculptural works are highly recognizable, and with the completion of recent public commissions her works occupy some prominent positions around New Zealand, including an idyllic cliff-top position on Waiheke Island (as part of Sculpture on the Gulf 2005); in a central hub at Auckland University; and her floating installation in the Lampton Harbour lagoon in Wellington. She also has a stunning bronze piece, “Numbers are the Language of Nature”, in the New Millennium Sculpture Walk in the Auckland Domain.

Chiara produces stunningly detailed and technically refined works, many of which are large scale, precisely produced from conception to installation. These works, which range from ‘Twins’ - a formidable yet graceful 7 meter long cast fabrication commissioned by the University of Auckland in 2003 - to a paper grid maze installation for Te Tuhi, communicate a natural geometric beauty and constructive expertise. Many of Chiara’s works are based on the exploration and repetition of geometric and modular forms, which she interprets through a large range of materials, fabrication processes, and scale.

Chiara enjoys collaborating with other professionals such as architects and structural engineers, and values the learning experiences that have come from working on large civic projects.

Chiara graduated with degrees in both Fine Arts and Architecture in her native Italy, before emigrating to New Zealand twenty years ago. Currently, one of Chiara’s large suspended works is featured in the exhibition, “Qui tutto bene” at Te Papa, which explores the contribution of the Italian community to New Zealand culture. She is currently also working on a civic project for Waitakere City Council, creating part of the new Paremuka Bridge in Ranui.
