| Tony Brown with painting. |
Tony Brown (40), offers us all a vision of perseverance and triumph over turmoil. An enthusiasm to forge a better life is what fuels Tony’s passion to create works that inspire powerful and emotive responses: “I want to reach out to people who are stuck”. Tony’s paintings, which are deeply inlaid with a locality and familiarity and in some cases are intimately provocative, grapple with issues such as drug use, loneliness, adoption and sobriety. Tony’s dark and raw works show an artist who interprets issues with an innate sense of compassion and individuality. Through a process of rehabilitation, Tony rediscovered art as a form of expression from childhood and he values the emotions he is able to stir within viewers of his work. “As a child my schoolbooks were more filled with doodles and drawings than school work”.
Tony has recently completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Manukau through the University of Auckland and presented a solo exhibition at Lopdell House Gallery “Behind the Mask” (2005).
The majority of Tony’s works are completed in acrylic on large boards and stretched hessian, rather than canvas. Some of his recent subjects include a classic Ford Mustang, personal musical influences, landscapes, text oriented work and portraits.
Tony has recently taken on a studio at CEAC which he uses as a space in which to paint and create.
