Children's Holiday Classes

CHILDREN’S SUMMER HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

An exciting week jam-packed with classes that are both educational and fun! Children work in a studio setting and enjoy developing unique skills in a safe environment. Classes are from 10am – 2.30pm and are either one or two days long. The course fee includes materials. Students need to bring their lunch and an old shirt to protect their clothes.

DESIGN YOUR OWN COMIC T-SHIRT (7 – 14 YRS)
TUTOR: GRANT COLE Mon 23 – Tue 24 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

Students create their own comic character and story. They will learn how to draw faces with plenty of expression and character, to create comic lettering and to use markers to bring a bold, colourful style to their artwork. At the end of the course the comic character and story are transferred to a T-shirt to be displayed to the world - a virtual comic on legs! NB: Students need to supply their own white or light coloured t-shirt. The transfer of the art to the T-shirt is done by the tutor after the course.

HUNDERTWASSER - THE ECO ARTIST (8 – 14 YRS)
TUTOR: KRISTIN KELL Mon 23 – Tue 24 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

Frederick Hunderwasser, artist and architect famous in NZ for creating the public bathrooms in Kawakawa using recycled materials, believed there are 'no straight lines in nature'. He created explosively colourful works that simply don't sit still on the page. Students will study his work and create their own painted masterpiece using all the brightest colours in the palette.

DIG IN DON`T WAIT (5 – 10 YRS)
TUTOR: KAIRAVA GULLATZ Mon 23 – Tue 24 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

Yes, this is going to be the class to make the best and most beautiful ceramic bowl ever for your favourite desert! Designs will be from your imagination so enjoy your creativity, make a clay waka to hold your icecream or a waterlilly for your fruit salad.

INSPIRATIONS FROM WONDERLAND!
(6 – 12 YRS)
TUTOR: CLAIRE HEY Mon 23 – Tue 24 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee $55

This will be a fun packed workshop. Taking inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, you will produce a delightful painting filled with imagination, stories and collage.

DALI'S TIME WARP (5 – 10 YRS)
TUTOR: EILIS GALUSZEWSKI Wed 25 – Thur 26 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

Come and explore the surreal dream world of Salvador Dali. In this workshop, using Dali's famous 'melting' clocks as inspiration, children will create a working clock with a difference. Techniques will include drawing and painting on MDF board.

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN MOSAIC’S (6 – 12 YRS)
TUTOR: BOE BUSCH Wed 25 – Thur 26 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

Discover the mysteries of ancient Egyptian Gods and Goddesses and bring them back to life through a mosaic tile. Over 2 days you will learn about the ancient Egyptians and create a drawing and mosaic tile of your favourite mythical character.

LITTLE HANDS, GIANT FORESTS (6 – 12 YRS)
TUTOR: LOUISE DOVE Wed 25 – Thur 26 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

Hand-prints will form the basis for a forest of native trees. Shapes and patterns will then be designed to represent the features of our many different native plants: cones, foliage, flowers, and seeds. These will be transferred to the artwork using methods of painting and print-making. Watch as a wonderful forest emerges. Perhaps a kereru, tui or fantail may come to visit, or even the ancient tuatara…

MADHATTERS TEAPARTY (7 – 14 YRS)
TUTOR: KAIRAVA GULLATZ Wed 25 – Thur 26 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

We will make all kinds of funky and unusual shapes for functional tea pots in this creative pottery class; for example, a monkey, whose arm becomes the spout. After designing your own unique tea pot, you will shape soft white tableware clay with your hands and decorate it with colourful patterns.

MULTI OUTCOME PUZZLES (7 – 14 YRS)
TUTOR: ANDREW HALL Wed 25 – Thur 26 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $55

Unlike boring two-dimensional flat jigsaw puzzles that have to be put together one way, we’re going three-dimensional, and if the pieces don’t fit – we’ll make them. We’ll have the usual fine selection of recycled materials to work with and have lots of fun considering wonderful ways to bring them all together as an inspiring 3D sculpture.

AFRICAN SAFARI EXTRAVAGANZA (5 – 8 YRS)
TUTOR: BOE BUSCH Fri 27 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $30

Bring along your binoculars and jump in the jeep as we’re going on a safari! Using a variety of materials like Indian ink, paint, leaves and the printing press, students will create a multi-media ‘painting’ on MDF of an African animal in a forest scene.

WATERFALLS AND FANTAILS (5 – 10 YRS)
TUTOR: KAIRAVA GULLATZ Fri 27 Jan: 10am – 2.30pm Fee: $30

This ceramic class is about designing and modelling a colourful wall tile with three dimensional applications. Our inspiration is the beautiful Waitakere Ranges with their rich variety of wild life and plants. Come to enjoy the play with clay!

Children’s classes are subsidised, thanks to generous support from The Trusts Charitable Foundation.
