Summer School
Monday 12th - Friday 16th January 200910am - 4.30pm
Corban Estate Arts Centre presents a week long programme of inspiring workshops led by an exciting line up of well known contemporary New Zealand artists. The Summer School engages participants in exploration, pushing boundaries and having fun in the creative field. In addition to the formal programme (details of each course follow) there will be an informal ‘tutor showcase’ presented by participating tutors. An optional visit has been arranged to view a couple of Waitakere’s hidden ‘Modernist’ treasures; the Holy Cross Church in Henderson with glass mosaics and stained glass windows designed by Milan Mrkusich and Louise Henderson, and a stunning modernist house designed by Tibor Donner, nestled in the foothills of Titirangi.
The Corban Estate Arts Centre (CEAC) Summer School is set in the grounds and buildings of the historic Corban Winery in Henderson, Waitakere City. Included within the facilities is the CEAC Gallery (located in the former Corban family homestead), which exhibits a diverse range of artists, many from Waitakere City. |
THE FABRIC FOLD SERIES II with BETH SERJEANT AND INGRID DUBBELT
 |
Fee $500
In this workshop, have the pleasure of creating either a soft book form or a fabric construction (e.g. a banner, scroll, hanging, celebratory cloth) by using screen print and intaglio, and incorporating folded, quilted and sewn techniques on canvas, cotton silk or paper. Students will be introduced to model book form and to basic (or more advanced) screen printing techniques including stencilled, stamped and photographic image. Students are encouraged to bring images and ideas for personal interpretation in colour and form.
Elizabeth (Beth) Serjeant is an artist who has extended her interest in printmaking to the integration of text and visual imagery and to the collaboration of these concepts and processes within the book format. In 1993 she facilitated the first National Bookworks Symposium in New Zealand. Beth currently teaches printmaking, papermaking and book structures at various tertiary institutions and community art centres in New Zealand and has exhibited widely both in New Zealand and internationally.
After studying textiles at London’s Central School of Art and Design, Ingrid Dubbelt established a studio in Auckland specialising in curtaining and upholstery fabric. The origin of her love of cloth has its roots in the influence of her uncle William Mason, who ran a hand-printed textile and wallpaper business in the 1960s. She draws inspiration from textiles the world over, but especially from modern abstract designs of the 1950s onwards.

JEWELLERY DESIGN with FRAN ALLISON
 |
Fee $500 Includes materials
Jewellers have had the chance to hone their skills and ability to manipulate metals, wood and ceramics for thousands of years. However, the invention of synthetic plastic now offers an enormous range of possibilities to a jeweller. This relative newcomer is a fabulous ‘faker’ and can easily transform itself to look like gold, or any number of other things. The magpie in us responds to its variety of colours and forms just as we would to the glitter of precious gems and in it we can preserve mementos or photographs. A variety of non toxic products are demonstrated in this class as we explore mold making, casting and embedding in resin, acrylics and found plastics plus basic metal jewellery techniques. Students will have the opportunity to make several items with the materials provided.
Fran Allison studied jewellery and silversmithing at Middlesex University and the Royal College of Art in London. She ran a jewellery workshop in London and taught at a number of art schools in the UK. Since returning to New Zealand she has been teaching jewellery and design at Manukau School of Visual Arts and making her own work from her backyard studio. She exhibits nationally and internationally and her work is held in a number of private and public collections.
