Summer School

The CEAC Summer School is gaining a reputation for offering five days of immersion in an inspiring environment of discovery and learning. In January 2010 an exciting line up of New Zealand artists will offer their skills and talents to stimulate and engage participants in a full-on learning experience involving exploration, pushing boundaries and fun. The variety of courses offered in 2010 will appeal to a broad range of interests and abilities.

The Corban Estate Arts Centre (CEAC) Summer School is set in the grounds and buildings of the historic Corban Winery in Henderson, Waitakere City. Included within the facilities is the CEAC Gallery (located in the former Corban family homestead), which exhibits a diverse range of artists, many from Waitakere City.

PAINTING (A SURREALISTIC NARRATIVE) with LEILA ATAYA

Fee $420 (materials not included)

This course is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners working in acrylics and/or oils. The programme will start with a demonstration and explanation of the fundamentals of painting. Students will have the opportunity to practice working on details as well as the creation of 3D illusion on a 2D surface. Students can work on landscapes, portraits or still life settings and give these genres a new twist by looking at them through the eyes of a surrealistic narrative. The class will be encouraged to evolve their ideas into a new body of work.

Leila has studied art in New Zealand (BFA – 2001, PGDip – 2008) and in Russia. She has won a number of art awards including the Telecom Art Award and Nokia – Asia Pacific Art Award. Leila is now a full time artist and exhibits in group and personal exhibitions throughout New Zealand as well as teaching group and private art classes.

INTRODUCTION TO GLASS CASTING with KATE RUTECKI

Fee $480 (includes most materials)

In this week long intensive, students will learn the art of cast glass. Kiln Casting is a way of creating sculptural glass objects in an electric kiln. From initial sketches, students will create clay forms, make plaster moulds from these and then fill them with melted glass. Students will discuss composition and colour and some class time will be spent resolving ideas and troubleshooting. There will be a trip to Gaffer Coloured Glass (which is the finest manufacturer of coloured casting crystal in the world) and a visit to Kate’s glass blowing and casting studio where students will load their moulds and glass into the kilns .

Kate’s work can be seen in collections around the world. She was recently shown in the Ebeltoft Museum’s “Outbreak” show and is currently exhibiting at the New Orleans Museum of Art. She has taught at the Pratt Fine Arts Centre, Hastings College, and the Corning Museum of Glass in New York.

DEVISING THEATRE with BETH KAYES

Fee $420

Beth Kayes is the artistic coordinator of Co. Theatre Physical, formed in Australia in 1995, and now based in Auckland. The company’s latest devised and hilarious production, “Ooh Baby Baby” was recently presented at The Edge in Auckland. Beth brings many years of theatre training and experience devising theatre pieces to this course.

As well as developing physical skills, learning about improvisation and choric work, you will explore ways to turn

HAND BUILT POTTERY with GRAHAM AMBROSE

Fee $520 (includes most materials)

Students will use a variety of processes to develop a small collection of pots and experimental pieces. Several techniques including pinching, coiling, slab work and press moulds will be introduced as well as experimentation with surface effects using stretching and texturing to enhance the clay surface. Participants will be invited to spend some time at Graham’s studio to familiarise themselves with the practical requirements and space demands of ceramic creations. The workshop will culminate in the building and firing of a small wood-fired Raku kiln and a brick enclosure for smoke firing. All participants should gain a basic understanding of some of the ceramic techniques employed to create pottery pieces.

Before taking up ceramics Graham worked designing and making furniture and musical instruments. He sees his involvement with clay as a continuation of this background with similar method and problem solving challenges.

FIVE PRINT PROCESSES IN FIVE DAYS with SHELLEY RYDE

Shelley Ryde is a recognised leader in the research and application of new, safer techniques and processes in the field of printmaking education. Students will take part in a practical workshop that will include drawing and multimedia techniques and involve five different printmaking processes: Collagraph, Mono -print and Monotype, Polyester Plate/Pronto plate, Photo-polymer/Solar plate and Drypoint.

Shelley Ryde is the Head of the Visual Arts Faculty at Diocesan School and is a renowned arts educator with more than 30 years experience. Shelley has been involved in curriculum development at national levels and has contributed to local, national and international courses and conferences in the visual arts field. Her own work is in private collections in New Zealand and internationally.

MASK MAKING, BAS RELIEF SCULPTURE AND CASTING with DONNA DEMENTE

Fee $520 (includes materials)

Explore a wide variety of exciting mask-making techniques with artist Donna Demente. Donna is renowned for her speciality in inspiring papier-mache creations, particularly masks and wearable art creations. She will teach the art of mask-making from positive clay moulds, face casting, bas relief masks and painting techniques best suited to the various sculptural forms. Students can expect to complete several projects and leave with a wealth of inspiration.

Donna was born and raised north of Auckland and trained at Elam (in Auckland) before heading off for a life of artistic adventure in the Deep South. She has taught and exhibited widely and forged a reputation as a talented painter, mask-maker, wearable artist and organiser of many colourful community arts events. She now runs an artists collective and gallery in Oamaru’s historic precinct.

BRONZE CASTING with DAVID REID

Fee $650 (includes materials)

An intensive and practical introduction to bronze casting. Students will learn the skills to create their own small scale bronze objects, including wax working, ceramic shell and molten metal preparation, pouring, finishing and patinating. In addition they will receive instruction on setting up a temporary foundry. Students will complete at least one hand sized piece in bronze.

David Reid is a highly knowledgeable and skilled craftsperson who lives, teaches and exhibits in Europe and Britain. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this course which he has taught as part of the CEAC Summer School for the past five years.

TAKE ON TIVAEVAE (ALL LEVELS) with MARY AMA

Fee: $420 (materials not included)

Learn the basics needed to create your own fabulous Tivaevae quilt in a friendly Pacifica environment. Mary is a highly inspirational and skilled tutor who will teach the techniques specific to the Cook Islands and assist students to develop their own design, colour combinations, cutting techniques and stitching methods to create a unique heirloom quilt.

Mary Ama is the Pacific Arts Advocate at the Waitakere City Council as well as a renowned weaver and Tivaevae quilt maker. She is passionate about sharing her love of Polynesian Culture and Cook Island heritage. Throughout her career, Mary has been interested in facilitating workshops that promote close bonds and networking among participants.

Summer School 2010 - Terms and Conditions

Fees must be paid in full before the start of the class; bookings will be confirmed upon full payment.

A full refund will be made if a class is cancelled or full at the time of enrolment. Any cancellation of classes will be announced by 11th January 2010. Any student cancellations before 4th January 2010 will incur a $45 administration fee. Any student cancelling after January 4th 2010 will be required to pay 75% of the full course cost.
