Summer School 2012

Students from all around New Zealand have an exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in a week of intensive workshops, exposed to the world of contemporary arts taught by talented artists.
These tutors with their specific well-honed expertise and specialist knowledge will assist students to explore, push boundaries, and discover new ways of working. In in a vibrant, friendly environment, students will expand their skills, be stimulated by fresh ideas and become inspired for the year ahead.
In addition to practical studio time, the Summer School programme offers optional activities including a visit to the creatively designed, Hobsonville Point (a new community in West Auckland), as well as the Tutor Showcase evening and an Open Afternoon (full details here). The CEAC Gallery, Café and the Gallery Shop are all on the summer school site, in the grounds of the historic Corban Winery.

TE MATA KIA MAHI ‘TO WORK THE SURFACE’ with ALEXIS NEAL (ALL LEVELS)

16 – 19 January (4 days) Fee: $350 (includes most materials) Develop new skills in print, from a traditional understanding to a contemporary art practice. Over the 4 day workshop students will work through a number of ideas to create their own artist language in this medium. Multi layered printing will be explored using relief surfaces from organic materials, woven fabric surfaces, dry point (using plexie plate), stencil cutting and other techniques. Students will look at a variety of materials and mark making processes to create a rich woven image. They will achieve a well-executed body of prints and be encouraged to edition one work.
Since completing a Masters degree in Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Fine Arts in London, Alexis has continued to develop her professional practice as a contemporary New Zealand artist. Alongside her professional career Alexis has also fulfilled tutoring positions in both academic and community institutions. As a practicing artist her work involves defining a place for women’s cultural identity and predominately has looked at the duality of artefacts in terms of personal adornment and material culture. Her studio practice is interdisciplinary, combining components of print, sewn feather canvases, weaving and installation works together to address Maori traditional whakapapa in a contemporary context.

HAND BUILDING POTTERY WITH RICK RUDD (ALL LEVELS)

16 – 20 January (5 days) Fee: $400 (includes some materials) Learn how to create pottery using the pinching and coiling processes. Students will begin by constructing a teapot then glazing and firing it in a kiln. Techniques for constructing large and small works will be demonstrated, including those for vessels as well as sculptural and figurative forms.
Throughout the 5 day workshop students can work on several pieces of pottery, these will need to be fired after the completion of the class. Students are encouraged to bring ideas of forms they may wish to make.
Here is an opportunity to learn from one of New Zealand’s leading studio potters. Rick Rudd was born in Great Yarmouth, England and trained at Great Yarmouth and Wolverhampton colleges of art between 1968 and 1973. In 1973 he arrived in New Zealand and since then has won numerous awards. He has exhibited throughout New Zealand and internationally. He has curated national exhibitions and has conducted workshops for potters’ groups and polytechnics around New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. He was president of the New Zealand Society of Potters from 1988 to 1991. His work is held in many New Zealand public collections and has been illustrated in several books.

MATERIAL EFFECTS WITH ANNA BROWNE (BEGINNERS – INTERMEDIATE)
16 – 19 January (4 days) Fee: $350 (includes some materials) Explore the creative possibilities of wonderful wool where second-hand garments, blankets and remnants will be repurposed into new forms. Students will learn the techniques of felting, weaving, stitching, colouring, crochet... transforming this versatile fibre. Items from home can be brought to the workshop to incorporate into a range of projects; from rugs, cushions and blankets, to bags and scarves.
Since completing her Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1993 Anna has been working in the design and textile industries. Her company Looma Textiles creates pieces for Interior Designers, showrooms and magazine publications. Alongside this work she has continued to make and exhibit her own art work.

MIXED MEDIA WITH BECK WHEELER (ALL LEVELS)

16 - 20 January (5 days) Fee: $400 (includes some materials) This course explores art making as a form of storytelling. Beck will take the class through exercises in composition, stylisation, abstraction and colour theory before encouraging students to tell their own stories with mixed media and acrylic paint.
Beck Wheeler is a storyteller who uses paint and found objects to explore narrative. She combines paint, textile, toy making and woodworking techniques to produce her unique pop surrealist artworks. Beck worked as a Visual Arts Lecturer in Melbourne for five years before moving back to New Zealand in 2010. She specialises in teaching traditional and contemporary rendering techniques. Her multi-disciplinary works have been exhibited internationally, and in 2008 she was named one of Australias Top Ten Creatives by Design Quarterly Magazine. Beck has recently set up studio in West Auckland after 13 years working in Melbourne and London.

GLASS CASTING WITH FIONA RENNIE SCHWIETERS (BEGINNERS)

16 – 20 January (5 days) Fee: $500 (includes all materials) An introduction to the rich process of lost wax glass kiln casting using beautiful locally made Gaffer Glass. Students will learn to work with wax by making hand sized sculptures. These can be made to fit together to make a larger work or remain as individual pieces. This 5 day workshop will focus on techniques that students can use to create unique and beautiful glass, learning to make moulds using R&R GC910 which gives a fine translucent finish. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm. Glass will be fired after the workshop.
Fiona has a Bachelor in Visual Art majoring in sculpture and has come from a carving tradition to glass casting. She teaches from her Grey Lynn studio and exhibits throughout New Zealand. She has recently taught at the Zanetti School on Murano, Venice. Fiona takes her inspiration from the lush abundance of nature, the indigenous culture of Aotearoa and original mythologies. Fiona is an inspiring teacher, using innovative techniques developed from 10 years’ experience.

PAINTING YOUR PASSIONS WITH NICKY FOREMAN (ALL LEVELS)

16 – 20 January (5 days) Fee: $300 (materials not included) This is a workshop that is ideal for anyone who wishes to learn how to utilise a variety of materials. Painting predominantly in oils, students will also learn how to apply other materials such as gold, silver and copper leaf, wax, patinas, inks and shellac to create luscious and intricate surfaces. We will focus on subject matter that you are passionate about, in particular your personal history and physical environment.
Nicky Foreman studied at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, graduating in 1992 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She began exhibiting in 1992 and continues to show regularly with dealer galleries in New Zealand and France. Her work is represented in many collections including Saatchi & Saatchi New York. She also has a teaching background and teaches regularly in High Schools. Her work is often concerned with taking mundane objects and resetting them so that they may be viewed as precious and beautiful. She draws her inspiration from Taranaki and her time in the South of France each year.

IGNITING THE CREATIVE FIRE OF LIFE WRITING with Bridget Brandon (All Levels)

16 – 20 January (5 days) Fee: $450 (includes all materials) This week long workshop is designed to give each participant, whether they're an experienced writer or just starting out, an enriching, powerful and practical knowledge of the art of writing life stories. Under Bridget’s guidance, students will learn how to translate the richness of lived experience into vivid, engaging stories You will call forth your imagination, your intellect, your intuition and creativity. Bridget’s particular skill is in bringing the story out and getting the writer to bypass the critic within.
Bridget Brandon (B.A. N.Z Dip Civ. Sorbonne) is an artist, a teacher, an actor, an entrepreneur, a mother. She has pursued a meditation practice for 30 years. Her working life has led her around the world from New Zealand as the Coordinator of Community Volunteers, to Paris in the diplomatic corps. She established Storyworks Australia in 1997. Storyworks teaches people how to write the story of their own lives. Storyworks courses allow you to mine the wealth of your own life experience through facilitated writing, listening and telling. Her deep practice of compassion gives her a unique ability to listen and to value the small and the large stories of life.

BRONZE CASTING WITH DAVID REID (ALL LEVELS)
16 – 20 January (5 days) Fee: $650 (includes all materials) This intensive and practical introduction to bronze casting has been a CEAC Summer School favourite for the past 7 years. Students will learn techniques to create their own small scale bronze objects, including wax working, ceramic shell and molten metal preparation, pouring, finishing and patinating. In addition they will receive instruction on setting up a temporary foundry. Students will complete at least one hand sized piece in bronze.
David Reid is a highly knowledgeable and skilled craftsperson who lives, teaches and exhibits in Europe and Britain and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this course.

FROM PENCIL TO STENCIL WITH HAYLEY KING aka FLOX (ALL LEVELS)

17 – 19 Jan (3 days) Fee: $350 (includes most materials) Students will be taken step by step through the creative process of stencil making. From the initial pencil sketch to stencil cutting and then finally learning the techniques of spray painting. Students will complete a piece of art work on plywood. Resource material based on native New Zealand flora and fauna will be provided as a starting point, but students are also welcome to work from self-sourced imagery.
Like the decorative vines and floral designs that have become synonymous with the name, Flox has been branching out into a full array of artistic disciplines. Hayley King the artist behind the name, has always had it in her head to work hard and be open to new ways of applying her art. Stenciling has become an integral part of the look and feel of her work, brand and business. “I like to keep my fingers in as many pies as possible, that way I’m more open to opportunities”. From prints, gift cards and a full women’s clothing line, to interior murals and private commission work, this girl has definitely got her hands full.

GRAFFITI ART WITH BOBBY HUNG aka BERST (ALL LEVELS)

17 - 20 January (4 days) Fee: $450 (includes most materials) This 4 day workshop is an introduction into the origins of Graffiti and its place in New Zealand. Students will learn the skills to create artwork for indoors and outdoors using aerosol paint. Berst will share his knowledge of Graffiti and various techniques and processes, while students do a collaborative mural onsite, and paint an artwork on canvas that will be exhibited as part of a group exhibition at CEAC. Berst is an experienced Graffiti artist and is at the forefront of graffiti in New Zealand. He has been painting for ten years and has travelled extensively around Australia, America, Europe and Asia. Born in Hong Kong, he has been living in New Zealand for the last twenty two years and is qualified in a variety of disciplines. He has a Diploma in Graphic Communication, Bachelor of Design and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching. Recently Berst has developed a popular workshop in graffiti for teenagers at CEAC.

WOOD CARVING WITH WHARE THOMPSON (ALL LEVELS)

16 - 20 January (5 days) Fee: $350 (includes most materials) During the week, Whare will work alongside students to design and carve a post that either can be displayed indoors or presented as a garden piece. Students will explore working with different carving tools; learn about carving techniques, patterns and their origins. This is an exciting opportunity to learn the skills of carving a form then adorning it with surface decoration or inlayed paua if desired. Once completed, the sculpture will be stained using traditional red ochre pigment mixed with oil. Whare Thompson is of Ngati Whatua and Ngapuhi descent. As an artist, he expresses his culture through art, using mixed medium and primarily working with native timber. “My ancestors developed their own disciplines to communicate that derived from the spiritual and the natural world. So I only wish to continue that relationship between those things, utilising traditional and contemporary references.”

If you withdraw from a class on or before 22 Dec 2011 your course fee will be refunded less a $50 administration fee. If you withdraw from a class on or after 23 Dec 2011 you will receive a 50% refund of your course fee. No refund will be given after a course has started. You will be advised by 10 Jan 2012 if a course is cancelled and a full refund will be made.
