We have a fabulous array of established New Zealand artists offering their skills and talents in a variety of mediums and techniques. Come and immerse yourself in art making in these practical, inspiring workshops. The Summer School programme also includes an orientation evening, a tutor showcase, artist studio visits and an open-door afternoon.

Michel Tuffery
Mark Making to Printmaking

Mon 18 – Fri 22 January, 10am – 4:30pm | 5 Days

During this workshop, Tuffery will take you through the processes and techniques of traditional woodblock printmaking. Processes covered include drawing and composition, chisel relief printing techniques, rotation, and multiple and emboss printmaking processes, ink application, press and registration. Outcomes focussed on creating a range of A4 and A3 finished print works. Designed to develop confidence and experiment with personal mark making, students are encouraged to generate new ideas during the week as well as bring along their own drawing concepts and imagery.

Hayley King aka FLOX
In The Cut

Mon 18 – Thurs 21 January, 10am – 4:30pm | 4 Days

In this workshop, Flox will take students step-by-step through the creative process of stencil making; from the initial pencil sketch to stencil cutting and then finally learning the techniques of aerosol painting. Students receive beautiful resource material based on native New Zealand flora and fauna, but they are encouraged to also bring their own designs and to work from self-sourced imagery. Final artworks will be completed on mounted plywood.

Intro to Aluminium Casting

Mon 18 – Thurs 21 January, 10am – 4:30pm | 4 Days

Discover the rudiments of aluminium casting by making a small foundry including all hardware; mould making, casting and finally finishing objects in aluminium. Creativity does not begin and end with the art object, but involves all aspects of establishing ones practice, including making and providing oneself with all the skills and equipment required. Focus is on problem solving with commonly available, affordable solutions and some lateral thinking to demystify the production of artworks.

Katie Smith
Textiles: A Journey in Print Design

Mon 18 – Fri 22 January, 10am – 4:30pm | 5 Days

This course is a well-rounded and inspiring workshop for textile enthusiasts to create their own unique fabric designs. Participants will be guided through the simple processes of screen printing and stencilling techniques onto cloth. Participants will explore textile collections, colour pallets, screen printing and mood boards as they develop and create a range of printed samples using composition, repetition and colour, and work towards developing a final printed linen piece.

Nicki Stewart
Encaustic Exploration

Mon 18 – Thurs 21 January, 10am – 4:30pm | 4 Days

Delve into the wonderful world that is wax and discover the core encaustic techniques using beeswax and dammar resin. Encaustic is an exciting and alchemical medium which predates oil painting. These 4 days of playing and experimenting using various tools and techniques will give you plenty of time to develop a strong sense of the possibilities of this exciting medium whilst building up a personal vocabulary to add to your current creative practice.

Terms and Conditions



GENERAL:
Enrolments will be confirmed and a materials list provided upon full payment. If you withdraw from a class on or before 7 January 2015 your course fee will be refunded, less a $50 administration fee. If you withdraw from a class on or after 8 January 2015 you will receive a 50% refund of your course fee. No refund will be given after a course has started. You will be advised by 9 January 2015 if a class has been cancelled, and a full refund will be made.

BRING A FRIEND DISCOUNT:
  • To be eligible for this discount, referred friends must give your name when registering for their class.

  • The 10% discount only applies to the enrolment of the person who has referred their friend.

  • Participants are only eligible to claim this discount once (though you are welcome to recommend the classes to more than one friend!)

  • Students who are eligible for the discount, and have already paid their Summer School fees in full, will receive a 10% refund.




Optional Activities

Orientation / Welcome

Sun 17 January, 6pm – 7pm

All Summer School participants are encouraged to attend this social, informative event to meet their tutors and fellow class mates and plan for the workshop ahead.

Tutor Showcase

Tue 19 January, 5pm – 6:30pm

Each tutor will give a brief fast-paced, informal presentation about an aspect of their working practice over drinks and nibbles. This is always an enjoyable, fun evening and not to be missed.

Artist Studio Visits

Wed 20 January, 4:30pm – 6pm

Corban Estate Arts Centre is home to 23 resident artists and this year we have planned a tour of several of their studios. Come and meet some of our onsite artists, tour their studios and talk to them about their work.

Visitors Open Afternoon

Thu 21 January, 2pm – 4:30pm

An opportunity for friends and family to visit the Summer School workshops at the Arts Centre to witness what is happening and being achieved.

Summer School Farewell

Thu 21 January, 5pm – 6:30pm

A chance to say ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ to all those who are completing 4 day workshops and for participants to come together to celebrate the week. Enjoy live music, drinks and nibbles on the lawn.
