“I’m a jeweler with an eye for fun and although spectacles are one of the most humorous areas of body adornment, my earrings and rings are also quite light-hearted.”
Brian Adam has been making contemporary jeweller for the past 20 years. After studying graphics and textiles at Wellington Polytechnic in 1968 - 71, he went on to study and work with jeweller Ruth Baird. Together they established a studio in Titirangi, where he now runs many of his courses.
Brian exhibits and sells his work widely around New Zealand and occasionally overseas. He is represented by Fingers Jewellery collective in Auckland.
Brian has a strong focus on passing on his skills and knowledge and has many years of experience tutoring and lecturing. He has run many ‘Street Jewellery’ ring-making classes to the general public in public spaces including high schools, museums and galleries around New Zealand.
“Passing on skills and ideas is increasingly becoming important to me. I especially enjoy seeing what kids can do when I take my ‘Street Jewellery’ silver ring classes to local schools and craft venues like CEAC. My master classes in the USA, Canada, and Australia are aimed at professionals, yet I include beginners.”
In 1981 he worked with Auckland jeweller Warwick Freeman as part of a QEII Mentor programme and was the recipient of a ‘QEII Major Professional Development’ grant in 1991. Brian is a member of the Contemporary Jewellers Group (NZ) and of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.
