Louise is a practising artist with a background in painting and drawing. Since completing her degree at Elam in 1996 she has, until recently, lectured for the University Of Auckland Bachelor Of Visual Arts Degree at the Manukau School of Visual Arts. She began as a casual tutor in drawing, then became a senior lecturer in painting and drawing and has held various positions including head of the drawing and studio programmes. She has also tutored on various community based workshops and courses. She is passionate about inspiring art making in her students that is creative and rewarding, and believes it is important to start from a student’s perspective and skill level. Teaching life- drawing is particularly exciting because the energy, spontaneity and intense observation involved can produce unexpected and beautiful work. The skills practised and acquired in life drawing often flow into other forms of work.
Louise has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions. This year her solo show Black Hibiscus at Fresh Gallery Otara was profiled on the Radio New Zealand Arts on Sunday programme, and she had a joint exhibition Nothing but Something at First Draft Gallery in Sydney.
Her work often reflects experiences of travel and living in other countries. Having grown up in the Solomon Islands she has a particular interest in pacific island imagery and materials. Her practise of drawing and working with found materials and objects often indicates movement and transience, and points towards ideas of how to find a position within shifting cultural experiences.
