Piha-resident Mandy Patmore has studied both design and teaching, and has tutored children’s art classes at CEAC for 5 years.
Both a practicing artist and musician Mandy is an active and vibrant local artist. Her recent artwork features a series of iconic paintings with a ‘kiwiana’ focus. Mandy enjoys creating juxtaposition in her compositions, using objects that are ‘around us’ all the time such as a ‘jandal’ and placing it within a provocative background of river rocks. ‘I use images that often reflect the quintessential New Zealand landscape’. Mandy’s favourite painting is one that features one of her son’s ‘Chuck Taylor’ shoes. This series was exhibited in her solo show ‘Earthworks’ which was held at the Signal Gallery (Swanson) in 2006.
Mandy has painted a number of public murals which can be viewed at various locations around the city including the Piha post office, pre-school, gallery, and the Moire Rd Community Centre in Massey. Recently Mandy acquired the contract to design the new ‘Piha Arts Bridge’ which is due to be built early 2008 and will replace the current bridge that connects the camp ground to the beach. Not just a visual artist, she also performs original music at local venues around Auckland and is currently recording an EP.
Mandy enjoys encouraging and inspiring the children in her art classes to have fun getting messy and to enjoy discovering new techniques and activities they wouldn’t normally do, or are not offered within the school art curriculum.
As well as teaching classes, Mandy is also privately tutoring a child with leukaemia who was the recipient of a scholarship to receive private art classes. The artwork produced within these classes will be exhibited later this year at the Auckland Starship Hospital.
