As part of the Matariki programme at CEAC this year we are offering the unique opportunity to learn the art of making and playing Taonga Puoro (Maori traditional instruments). Co-tutor Riki Bennett (Ngati Pikiao, Te Arawa, Ngati Pourou) has been a player of Taonga Puoro for over 10 years. He discovered his passion for the intrinsically natural and haunting sounds of traditional Maori instruments after attending a wananga with the late Dr Hirini Melbourne. Melbourne was one of the first people to bring about a resurgence in Taonga Puoro through extensive research within New Zealand and overseas.
Riki, who also works closely with good friend and co-musician Rewi Spraggon, describes some of the highlights they have been involved with through their association to Taonga Puoro, in particular travelling to Tahiti, New York and Dubai for a series of performances. Riki and Rewi, who have their own group ‘Te Aratoi’, have worked on a range of projects including the 100% NZ tourism campaign, and the soundtrack for locally produced documentary ‘Taua’, recent New Zealand performances include the Creative New Zealand National music night (2006) and the opening for AKO7.
Riki who privately runs educational workshops (pre-school age through to adults) focusing on traditional Maori plant use, enjoys being able to see an aspect of Maori culture passed on, and aims to instil a sense of pride, for all New Zealanders in our cultural heritage. Riki has found a good method of teaching or passing on this traditional knowledge and art is through stories and hands on learning. The CEAC workshop will aim to send each student home with their own handmade instrument, and the ability to play it.
You can join Riki Bennett and Rewi Spraggon on the Maori Traditional Flute making workshop (All Levels), at CEAC on Saturday 4th August. See the Adult Classes listings for more information.
