Writing Theatre

WRITING THEATRE with Gary Henderson
Thursday evenings, 7 – 9:30pm, from 16 February | 1 YEAR

Class now fully booked

Writing Theatre is a year-long programme with NZ playwright and teacher Gary Henderson, beginning at an introductory level.

You will learn and practise the art and craft of writing for live performance. Using the spoken word, action, light, sound, and design, you’ll be able to create stories that will engage and move an audience.

During the year you’ll write three scripts of increasing length and complexity, and work on them with professional directors and actors. In addition you’ll have a two-hour class each week and an online component where you can interact with your colleagues and tutor between classes.

Participants who complete the programme will be invited to join the ‘Graduate Studio’ - a monthly meeting of experienced writers, where you will have the opportunity to realise your own work on stage.

About Gary Henderson

Gary Henderson’s plays have been produced throughout the country and worldwide. He has twice won ‘NZ Play of the Year’ at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards, for Home Land in 2007 and Peninsula in 2012. In 2013 he received the Playmarket Award for his significant artistic contribution to NZ theatre. He has taught theatre writing at the University of Otago and Victoria University, Wellington. He directed the premiere of his most recent play, the sci-fi thriller Shepherd, at The Court Theatre, Christchurch, in February 2015 and in 2016 a French translation of his classic play Skin Tight premiered in Montréal
