Kesak! 100 Years of the Corban Estate
 |
| Keshak! 100 years of the Corban Estate Exhibition Display |
Sunday 8th September – Sunday 27th October 2002 In 1902 Lebanese immigrant Assid Abraham Corban purchased 10 acres of land in Henderson with the intention of starting a vineyard. Many people thought he was optimistic to venture so far out of Auckland and that the enterprise would struggle. But AA Corban was a farsighted, enterprising man and he knew exactly what he was looking for. The name Corban speaks for itself – his vision and the families’ hard work turned this estate into one of the largest, most successful wineries in New Zealand. This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Corban Wines on this site, and the beginning of a new era – the Corban Estate Arts Centre. A fascinating assortment of photographs and memorabilia celebrating the history of the estate, and the family behind it will form the inaugural exhibition in the new galleries, located in the old family homestead. |
West Auckland Winemakers - Photographs by Marti Friedlander
 |
| Photographs by Marti Friedlander |
Monday 9th September – Sunday 27th October 2002 Since emigrating to New Zealand from London in 1958 well known documentary photographer Marti Friedlander has had a strong association with West Auckland. For many years her husband Gerrard ran a local dental practice, and Henderson was their home upon arrival in the country, until 1967.
During Marti’s time in the area she came to know many of the local characters. In 1964, after an invitation from Dick Scott, the editor of the magazine Wine Review, she began to take photographs of local winemakers and vineyards. Throughout the 1960’s her documentary photographs of fledging vineyards around the country appeared in Wine Review, capturing the spirit of this industry and the pioneering characters behind it.
A selection of these poignant black and white images, profiling West Auckland winemakers will be on display as part of the Corban Estate opening celebrations. |

Working in West Auckland from the 1920s onwards, she acquired a love of clay and learnt the art of making pottery from the staff at her brother’s brickworks, and by tenaciously teaching herself. This extraordinary local identity went on to become well known around the country for her vibrant, individual work which is highly collectible today. This exhibition brings together a selection of her works from public and private collections as well photographs of Briar at work in her studio. |
Formal Occasions - New Ceramic Work by John Parker & Susannah Bridges
 |
| Ceramic works by Sue Bridges and John Parker |
Saturday 7th December 2002 – Sunday 19th January 2003 Two of our leading ceramic artists will be working together to create a new body of work based around the idea of the 'formal occasion'.
John Parker has had a strong career in a number of creative fields. He is best known for his restrained highly formal ceramic vases, and his work as a theatre and exhibition designer. For this exhibition he will be combining these skills and stepping out in a new direction, changing scale, and developing a new idea.
Susannah Bridges is one of the leading fresh faces in the New Zealand ceramics field. She has already made a name for herself as a designer of highly refined ceramic lights and vessels. In this exhibition she will take a sculptural approach to an exploration of ideas that stem from the display of objects in peoples homes - objects reserved for that 'special occasion'. |
