Raw War: Paintings by Jocelyn Reece

Exhibition Dates: Friday 31st March – Sunday 30th April

Over the past few years Jocelyn Reece’s work has been based on the idea that there is a universal need to find time to contemplate the past, to become still for a moment for reflection amidst the giddy pace of the present. In Jocelyn’s case this has compelled her to research her family’s personal and historical narratives. In this particular body of work she looks at the loss of identity experienced by our young soldiers in World War I on their return to New Zealand. Leaving with high hopes and excitement to fight for their country, many who returned were shattered in spirit, changed in personality and health, and found little professional support to help them recover. Using the cross as a metaphor, in this exhibition Jocelyn explores the experiences of her own father.

Jocelyn Reece completed a visual arts degree in 1999 at the Auckland University of Technology.

Gemini: Paintings by Doris Dutch

This exhibition of approximately twenty ink and line paintings marks a recent departure made by Doris Dutch from her more well known representational paintings. These vibrant, abstract and highly graphic paintings came about after Doris read an article about an ink blowing technique, a method with which she has become fascinated. These explorations of colour and pattern have a controlled yet random nature and it is the element of the unexpected which she finds so engaging.

Uncertain Space

Photograph by Jenny Tomlin
Photographers: Liz March, Katharina Nobbs, Jenny Tomlin

Exhibition Opening Thursday 1st June at 6pm
Exhibition Dates: Friday 2nd June - Sunday 9th July

In this exhibition three photographers explore the notion of uncertainty. None of us know what tomorrow, next week or next year will bring to our lives. In each of the photographers images metaphors are used to illustrate various internal waiting spaces we may find ourselves in. Places that may not make sense, and lead to uncertain outcomes. The disempowering quality of the waiting room, altered perception through image distortion, and the ‘space’ a physical disability can confine you to, are all themes to be explored in this exhibition. (This exhibition has been scheduled as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography.

Graviton Gravy

'Graviton Gravy' by Mark Whyte
Constructed Images by Mark Whyte
Exhibition Dates: Friday 15th December to Sunday 28th January 2007

The pixilated images in this exhibition are based on the human face and are inspired by the plethora of portrayals viewers are swamped with in magazines and newspapers. These images have been assembled from the harvested scrapings of a paint palette. Installed on mass, they create an absorbing juxtaposition between diversity and similarity, detail and mass. Alluding to the dichotomy between individual existence and globalization, while visually referencing portraiture, digital imagery and pointillism, these painstakingly crafted ‘paintings’ mark a new area of exploration for artist Mark Whyte.
