Pollywood

Now into the ninth successful year of exhibiting, Pollywood, pacific island short film, has gone from strength to strength, promoting pacific island stories, culture, ideas, lifestyles and vision, with the world. Join us to view a selection of new short films by pacific island film makers. Programme curated by Craig Fasi.

POLLYWOOD FILMS 2011

Va Tapuia (Sacred Spaces) Directed by Tusi Tamasese, 15mins
Taro planter Lui’s grief for his dead wife has infected his whole life. A chance meeting with a stranger, a widow bound by anger to the grave of her husband now drowning in their cyclone devastated village, inspires Lui to reach out to her. This releases him from his own pain and allows his wife to rest.

The Six Dollar Fifty Man Directed by Mark Albiston & Louis Sutherland, 15mins
It's hard to look after yourself in the playground when you're different. Set in 1970s New Zealand, The Six Dollar Fifty Man follows Andy, a gutsy eight year-old boy who lives in a make believe superhero world where his imagination allows him to perform extraordinary physical feats, to deal with playground bullies. But when Andy gets in trouble with the headmaster, he realizes that to save himself & his only friend Mary, he must face up to the real world. 2009 NZ

Fanatics Directed by Damon Fepuleai, 6mins
Made in 2009 as part of the V 48 Hour Film Competition, "Fanatics" is a horror/comedy about a late night talk-back radio host who is stalked at his station by a psychotic listener. The host supports The Blues and the mysterious caller supports The Crusaders. When the host's producer is kidnapped, the host must choose between his friend's life or admitting that The Crusaders are better than The Blues. The film was awarded the Peter Jackson Wildcard and won the best actor award for Henry Tuipea. 2009 NZ

Carousel Directed by Damon Fepuleai, 6mins
Made in 2010 as part of the V 48 Hour Film Competition, "Carousel" is a road movie about a former criminal, Jay, who has chosen a normal life with his wife and new born son. However his dark past catches up with him when two former colleagues find him. Believing that Jay sold them out to the police, they exact their revenge on him by threatening to kill his wife and son and then they beat Jay unconscious. When Jay wakes up he must run home but will he be in time to save his family? The film makers received their third Peter Jackson Wildcard award and Jerry Tauamiti won his second best actor award. 2010 NZ

From the pacific we rise Directed by Vela Manusaute, 20mins
The Kila Kokonut Krew (KKK) was created in 2002 from a desire to fill a gap in the Pacific Island Performing Arts Industry. Vela Manusaute and Anapela Polataivao, both Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School graduates, formed a professional entertainment company that combined Pacific talent and a message for their audience in an entertaining way. Based in South Auckland, the KKK’s goal was clear – to create theatre with a strong political and social focus that the rest of the world could not ignore. 2011 NZ/SAMOA
